1,500 non-native speakers learn Dutch at Allez:NL event in Brussels
More than 1,500 non-native speakers in Brussels are joining the Allez:NL event on Tuesday, participating in various activities to help them learn or practise Dutch. Participants can learn Dutch in a fun way in several community centres, cultural centres and other places in the city.
"It is not always easy for people learning Dutch in Brussels to practise outside the classroom," said Cieltje Van Achter, Flemish minister for Brussels and guardian minister of the Dutch Language House, during her visit to the event. "With Allez:NL, the Dutch Language House enables the people of Brussels to use their Dutch in an accessible and fun way."

For example, participants can enjoy the Flemish film Pauline & Paulette, a crash course in applying for a job in Dutch or sumo wrestling in a sumo suit. Break-dancing, embroidery, pancake-making, football, badminton and improvisational theatre lessons are also available. There is even a large city game where participants can learn Dutch in a fun way while exploring the city.
50 organisations
In total, around 50 organisations from all over Brussels are taking part in the fourth edition of Allez:NL. The event is organised by the Dutch Language House, which helps non-native speakers find out how to start learning Dutch.
"It is our ambition to give Brussels residents every opportunity to get ahead with Dutch," says Patrick Manghelinckx, director of the Dutch Language House. With Allez:NL, "we bundle a lot of practice activities into one day and give them the enthusiasm to continue their learning path".
