22-year-old suspect caught after ambulance theft in Antwerp

A 22-year-old man from Antwerp has been arrested and arraigned before the investigating judge by police investigating the theft of an ambulance. He was released under conditions.

On Sunday morning, three youths stole a parked ambulance in the Antwerp district of Luchtbal and took it for a joyride. The ambulance's paramedics had parked their vehicle while they went to an urgent medical intervention and noticed the theft when one of them went downstairs to retrieve extra medical equipment.

The theft was captured by a camera in the ambulance, which shows the suspects driving at excessive speed with the passenger door open. After a short drive of a few hundred metres, they abandoned the ambulance and disappeared.

One of the suspects presented himself to the police on Sunday night. He confessed during interrogation and was arrested. The investigating judge decided on Monday morning to release him under conditions.

The other two involved are still being traced.
