6.8 tonnes of cocaine found and 4 people arrested in port of Antwerp
Belgian customs seized 6,822 kg of cocaine in the Antwerp port area on Sunday, the Antwerp public prosecutor's office said on Tuesday. Police detained four suspects in connection with the discovery.
The drugs were seized at the Kaai 1742 terminal in Waasland port. The cocaine was hidden in a container of bananas coming from Ecuador.
The federal judicial police of Antwerp detained four suspects in connection with the find. They have since been brought before the investigating judge who ordered their arrest.
Drugs, especially cocaine from South America, continue to flood the port of Antwerp, figures published last week by Belgian customs show. In the first half of the year, 43.43 tonnes of cocaine were intercepted, along with 2,803 kg of heroin and 161 kg of MDMA.
