ACV remains largest union, social election results show
ACV remains by far the largest trade union in Belgium, according to preliminary results of the latest social elections. The Christian union won 53.3 per cent of the seats in works councils across the country, Labour minister Piere-Yves Dermagne announced on Thursday. It did lose some ground compared to 2020, when it won 55.6 per cent of seats.
The socialist union ABVV, meanwhile, won 34.6 per cent of works council seats and the liberal ACLVB 10.9 per cent. These are improvements compared to 2020, when the unions won 33.6 per cent and 9.5 per cent respectively. It is the first time that the ACLVB has exceeded 10 per cent of seats.
The Committees for Prevention and Protection at Work (CPBW) showed a similar development. The ACV obtained 55.4 per cent of the national vote and maintained its absolute majority. The ABVV obtained 34.2 per cent of the mandates and the ACLVB 10.4 per cent.
The ACV also remains the largest party in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. It scored best in Flanders with 57.3 per cent, compared with 31 per cent for ABVV and 10.8 per cent for ACLVB. The ACLVB achieved its best result in Brussels with 15.8 per cent, while the ABVV was strongest in Wallonia with 42.9 per cent.
Voter turnout fell slightly from 60.45 per cent in 2020 to 59.6 per cent this year.
