Surgical conference carries out world's first AI-assisted surgery and remote operation

A surgical conference in Ghent has carried out the first-ever surgery with real-time AI commentary, VRT NWS reports.
The AI tool, developed by the Belgian training and innovation centre for minimally invasive and robotic surgery, Orsi Academy, and US technology company Nvidia, analysed live footage and provided responses tailored to the expertise of the audience, which included engineers and top surgeons.
The technology enables real-time explanations without disrupting the surgical team, making it a valuable tool for medical training. It could also help patients by answering post-operative questions, a task that is often too time-consuming for healthcare professionals.
Another breakthrough at the conference was Belgium's first remote robotic surgery. A test setup in Ghent remotely controlled a surgical robot operating on a chicken leg in Shanghai, demonstrating the potential of tele-surgery with minimal delay.
Remote surgery could reduce travel for both specialists and patients, while improving sterility in operating rooms. However, challenges remain, including the need for a stable network and regulatory approvals before it can be applied to human procedures.
