Antwerp company secures investment to expand fall detection lamps for elderly care

Antwerp-based tech company Nobi has raised 35 million euros in a new financing round. The company, which developed smart lamps that detect falls among the elderly, will use the funds to create "new functions to support older adults and their caregivers".

Nobi’s lights, powered by artificial intelligence, can detect falls and alert caregivers in residential care centres, enabling faster response times and reducing the risks associated with prolonged time on the floor.

"This means the elderly spend less time lying on the ground, which otherwise increases the risk of complications or death," Nobi said. The lamps also play a preventive role, automatically switching on when residents get up at night and notifying caregivers about "risky behaviour", such as extended periods in the bathroom.

The latest investment round was led by Italian health and biotech investor Angelini Ventures and US-based Nexus NeuroTech Venture, with support from Japanese venture capitalist 15th Rock. Existing backers include EQT, the Flemish government’s PMV investment vehicle, Nobi founders Roeland Pelgrims and Bert De Haes and Swiss entrepreneur Balz Halter.

Nobi recently secured a significant deal with US-based Frontier Senior Living. Following two successful test periods, Nobi’s lamps have been deployed across 56 care centres with 3,700 residents. By 2024, the company reports having sold smart lamps for 6,202 residential units across 219 care institutions.

Founded in 2018, Nobi employs 50 people but aims to grow to 80 full-time staff by the end of the year. It has offices in Belgium, the US and the UK and sells its lamps in 22 countries.
