Antwerp supports new diamond verification point in Botswana
Botswana is set to host a new Export Verification Point for rough diamonds, marking the second such facility after Antwerp. The initiative, guided by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), aims to enhance the traceability of diamonds and prevent those of Russian origin from accessing G7 markets.
Since March, Antwerp has operated a control point where rough diamonds are checked and certified, ensuring compliance with stringent international standards. Recognising the need for similar facilities in diamond-producing regions, AWDC advocated for their establishment, leading to Botswana's selection.
"Botswana wants to take the lead in responsible mining and traceability of diamonds so that we can ensure that our diamonds shine aesthetically but above all ethically," said Duma Boko, President of Botswana.
To prepare for the new facility, Botswana’s existing diamond control systems were analysed for alignment with G7 requirements. Based on the findings, Botswana and the G7 are collaborating on a roadmap to expedite the operational launch of the verification point.
AWDC will play a key role in this process, providing expertise and support. "We offer a kind of blueprint that meets what is required today in terms of compliance and transparency," explained Karen Rentmeesters, CEO of AWDC.
