Antwerp to build new public heritage depot to house 800,000 items
Antwerp is set to have a new heritage depot in the Zuid district that will house the city's entire heritage collection, comprising 800,000 items, and make them accessible to the public.
The depot will be in the new Pomppark Zuid, near the ring road. The city envisions it as a "hospitable building" open to visitors. It will store a wide variety of heritage items, including works of art, historical objects and archaeological finds, many of which are not on display in permanent or temporary exhibitions.
"Our impressive heritage collection forms the physical memory of our city," said Nabilla Ait Daoud, city councillor responsible for culture. "They are, as it were, the puzzle pieces of our collective past, of our Antwerp pride and DNA.
"The city has the responsibility to carefully preserve that rich cultural heritage and to pass it on to the next generations of Antwerp residents."
The design for the facility consists of three interconnected sections: the main depot, a work building and a reception area. Additionally, there will be a café. The depot will be climate-controlled to ensure optimal preservation of the collection. The city aims for the depot not only to serve as a storage facility but also to add value to the Pomppark, creating a welcoming space for visitors.
