ASML and imec strengthen partnership for semiconductor research and sustainability

Belgian research hub imec and Dutch chip equipment giant ASML have signed a five-year strategic partnership to advance semiconductor innovation and sustainable technology in Europe.
The collaboration will focus on developing next-generation semiconductor technology, including cutting-edge chipmaking processes and tools. ASML will provide its full range of lithography and metrology systems, including advanced EUV and DUV machines, which will be integrated into imec’s pilot line.
The partnership aims to accelerate research into AI-driven semiconductor applications. There will be a focus on sub-2nm chip technology, silicon photonics, memory and advanced packaging.
A key aspect of the agreement is a commitment to sustainability. Funding will be allocated to projects that offer environmental and societal benefits.
The initiative is part of Europe’s broader efforts to strengthen its semiconductor industry. It is backed by the EU Chips Act and receives funding from the Chips Joint Undertaking, the EU’s Digital Europe programme, and several governments, including Belgium (Flanders), the Netherlands and France.
