At least 182 people killed in Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon
Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon on Monday have killed at least 182 people, according to the Lebanese Health ministry. At least 727 people were also wounded, including children, women and rescue workers, the ministry said.
The Israeli army says dozens of its warplanes have struck more than 300 targets of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement in southern Lebanon since the offensive began on Monday morning. The army accuses Hezbollah of deliberately hiding weapons in residential buildings.
The bombardment has caused many people in the south to flee, such as in the outskirts of the city of Tyre. Some are moving into the city centre or to the base of the UN Interim Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon. There are long traffic jams of people trying to get to Beirut or other places in the north of the country.
100,000 people displaced
Since the 7 October attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas and the ensuing war in the Gaza Strip, tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border have been displaced by almost daily shelling between the Israeli army and Hezbollah. In southern Lebanon, some 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
Both sides have stepped up their attacks since thousands of pagers exploded in Lebanon last week. Israel is suspected of being behind the blasts, but has denied any involvement.
