Bear dies in fight at Pairi Daiza animal park

A bear died at Pairi Daiza zoo on Sunday afternoon following a fight with another bear, the animal park in Brugelette has confirmed.

A fight began in the black bears’ enclosure between two of the dozen or so animals in the group, something that also happens in the wild, after one bear became especially aggressive towards a second. 

Staff fired blank shots in an attempt to scare the animals and drive them apart, but this did not work and one of the two died from its injuries.

Visitors to the park were at no time in danger, the park said, though the area in question was closed to the public.
