Olympics: Belgian Cats qualify for quarter-finals with victory over Japan

The Belgian Cats qualified for the quarter-finals of the Olympic women's basketball competition with an 85-58 win over Japan. They overtake China on points difference as one of the best third-placed teams in the group stage.

With defeats to Germany and the USA, Belgium needed to beat Japan by at least 27 points to guarantee their place in the next round.

The scenario was considered almost impossible, but against Japan the Cats showed the form that won them the European Championship in 2023. A standout performance saw them qualify with a margin of exactly 27 points.

Their opponents in the knockout stage will be known on Sunday evening after the final matches in Groups B and C.
