Belgian PM calls Trump assassination attempt 'shocking and unacceptable'
The assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump is "shocking and unacceptable", Belgian prime minister Alexander De Croo said on Sunday in reaction to Saturday's shooting at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
"There is never any place for violence in a democracy," De Croo said. "Fortunately, the injuries appear to be limited and I wish him a speedy recovery," he said.
A man opened fire at the rally on Saturday night, killing one spectator and critically injuring two others. Trump was escorted off stage with blood visible around his right ear and taken to hospital. Trump later said on social media that a bullet had pierced the top of his ear.
Secret Service agents killed the shooter at the scene, who has since been identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. His motives are still unknown.
Earlier on Sunday, Belgian Foreign minister Hadja Lahbib also condemned the attack. "Political violence has absolutely no place in our democracy," she said in a post on X. "We must stand united against such acts and ensure that violence never becomes a means of expression."
