Belgian police arrest 7 suspects in terrorism investigation

Police have recently detained seven people for questioning as part of a terrorism investigation in Belgium, the federal prosecutor's office said on Thursday. Fourteen house searches were also carried out across the country.

While the investigation is being conducted by the Federal Judicial Police in Antwerp, the searches took place throughout the country: in Antwerp, Seraing, Sint-Joost-ten-Node, Menen, Leopoldsburg, Liège, Kortrijk, Ghent and Zonhoven.

Seven people were taken in for questioning. The investigating judge must now decide whether they will be charged and arrested. They are suspected of participating in the activities of a terrorist group and financing terrorism.

Those arrested are also suspected of preparing a terrorist attack. A specific target had not yet been determined, according to the prosecutor's office, which declined to comment further.
