Belgian student dies after falling off cliffs in Ireland

A young Belgian woman has died this weekend after falling off cliffs in Ireland. That reported local Irish media and was confirmed by the Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs. The Belgian woman was reportedly a medical student who was visiting the well-known Cliffs of Moher with friends.

According to local Irish media, the woman lost her balance while walking along the cliffs. The Irish coast guard launched a major search and rescue operation, involving a rescue helicopter. The body was quickly found and transferred to a nearby hospital.

The Belgian woman was reportedly studying in Edinburgh, Scotland, but was on a trip to Ireland with friends. The Belgian embassy in Dublin and the relevant department at the FPS Foreign Affairs are following up the case.

The Cliffs of Moher, which are among the highest coastal cliffs in Europe, are a well-known tourist attraction in the region. At the spot where the young woman died, the cliffs are some 120 metres high.

It’s unfortunately not the first fatal accident in the region. In January 2019, an Indian 26-year-old fell down while trying to take a selfie. In June 2007, a young Hungarian died while on a trip to the Cliffs of Moher when he was taking photos with friends.
