Belgian team prepare for first winter Invictus Games
A delegation of 12 soldiers will represent Belgium at the first winter edition of the Invictus Games in Canada in February. The games are a multi-sport event for soldiers and veterans who have been injured in service.
The Belgian athletes will participate in both individual and team sports: alpine skiing and snowboarding, Nordic skiing, biathlon, skeleton, swimming and indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, wheelchair curling and wheelchair rugby.
The Belgian team consists of 11 men and one woman, aged between 32 and 57.
Britain’s Prince Harry initiated the event in 2014, having been inspired by the Warrior Games in the US. The first winter edition is scheduled to take place from 8 to 16 February, in Vancouver and Whistler. A total of 500 soldiers from 25 countries are taking part.
The Belgian soldiers were presented at the Heverlee barracks on Thursday, in the presence of Defence minister Ludivine Dedonder. It is the third time Belgium has participated in the Invictus Games, after 2022 in The Hague and 2023 in Düsseldorf.
