Belgians spend 62 million euros online on Black Friday

Belgian online shoppers spent 62 million euros on Black Friday 2023, with 475 transactions per minute. This is according to the latest e-commerce study by Becom, the Belgian e-commerce association.

Belgians made nearly 690,000 online purchases on the most popular shopping day of the year in 2023, spending an average of 2.5 million euros per hour. Becom requested the data from online payment providers such as Mollie and Bancontact.

The average online shopping basket in Belgium was 83 euros in 2023, a figure that has remained stable since 2020. The total number of Belgian online shops increased to 63,202 in 2023, compared to 57,221 the year before. The total turnover decreased slightly to 13.3 billion euros, compared to 13.8 billion euros in 2022.

Popular with young people

Black Friday is most popular with young people aged between 18 and 35: 31 per cent of them say they mainly shop online on this day, compared to 19 per cent of 35-54 year olds and 17 per cent of 55-65 year olds. These are the findings of a survey of 1,000 Belgian consumers.

The study also shows that only 26 per cent of consumers know in advance what they are going to buy. Four out of ten let themselves be surprised and decide on the spot. Almost seven out of ten people shop both during and outside peak times.

The impact of Black Friday goes beyond one day. In the week around Black Friday, the number of online transactions increases by around 50 per cent, from 3 million to 4.5 million per week. This year, Black Friday will take place on Friday 29 November.
