Belgium nominates Hadja Lahbib as European Commissioner
Belgium has nominated the minister of foreign affairs, Hadja Lahbib (MR), as its choice for the European Commissioner candidacy. A reliable source confirmed this to Belga on Monday. Lahbib beat fellow party member Didier Reynders, who was seeking a second term as European Commissioner.
After failing to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's deadline for submitting candidates, Belgium was the last member state to submit its nominee for European Commissioner. There was heavy speculation that Reynders would be chosen after expressing his interest in serving a second term in the position. In the end, Lahbib was selected.
