Belgium opens several ski slopes after snowfall
Several Belgian ski and sledging slopes were opened on Friday after snow fell in the eastern part of the country. Freezing temperatures mean they are likely to remain open on Saturday.
Several mountain slopes have enough snow to open for cross-country skiing, sledging and even alpine skiing on Friday.
Of the 15 resorts in the Eastern Cantons, a small region in the east of Belgium, three will be open on Friday, according to the snow bulletin from the region's tourist office. The bulletin is regularly updated online.
Up to 15cm of snow
In Liège, snow sports enthusiasts will be able to sledge on the Ovifat slope, which had 15 centimetres of snow on Friday morning. Two alpine ski runs are also open in this resort.
At Mont Spinette, near Malmedy, one of the cross-country ski runs is covered with 10 centimetres of snow and is accessible, albeit on an unmarked track. Losheimergraben, near the German border, has 15 centimetres of snow. Its three tracks are open.
Finally, in the province of Luxembourg, the Baraque de Fraiture reported 10 centimetres of snow on Friday morning. The sledging and alpine ski runs are open. A sledging run is also open at Val de Wanne.
Weekend skiing
Local tourism officials are optimistic that the snow will stay on the slopes throughout the weekend. "It snowed again near Malmedy recently and the cold weather is expected to continue," said Benoît Bodart, an employee of the Maison du Tourisme des Hautes Fagnes - Cantons de l'Est. "The slopes that are open now should remain open this weekend, certainly on Saturday."
