Belgium's top scorer Lukaku drops out injured just three weeks before World Cup
Romelu Lukaku has suffered another injury, this time in the left thigh, just three weeks before the World Cup gets underway in Qatar. This was confirmed by his club Inter Milan after medical examination.
Inter Milan's Belgian on-loan striker is out for at least the rest of the week. After this first week, his condition will be evaluated, the club says. For Belgium's national team, the Red Devils, this news is a considerable setback ahead of the World Cup.
29-year-old Lukaku only made his comeback last week after being out with a muscle injury since late August. During a brief substitute appearance in the Champions League against Viktoria Pilsen (4-0), 'Big Rom' immediately picked up a goal. Last Saturday, the striker played more than twenty minutes in the league game against Sampdoria (3-0 win).
Because of this new injury, Lukaku will miss tomorrow's trip to Bayern Munich on the final matchday of the Champions League group stage. Both teams are already qualified for the eighth-finals.
The Red Devils were hoping more than ever to rely on their top striker (68 goals in 102 international games) for the World Cup in Qatar. The Belgians will play their first group match against Canada on November 23rd. This match will be followed by duels against Morocco (November 27th) and Croatia (December 1st).
