Bpost expands double-decker lorry fleet to reduce carbon footprint
Postal company bpost is adding new double-decker lorries to its fleet as part of efforts to reach its sustainability targets. The trucks will reduce the number of vehicles needed to transport letters and parcels between Belgium’s five main sorting centres and hundreds of distribution centres.
The first 10 double-decker lorries were brought in three years ago and 14 more will be added this year. The group plans to buy more than 300 by 2030 and up to 550 in the following 20 years.
Most of the new trailers have movable floors to make loading and unloading easier, and three have solar panels on the roof. They can hold 69 trolleys on the two floors, compared with a standard trailer’s 44-trolley capacity. The increased capacity should mean fewer journeys and fewer trucks on the road.
“We have already committed to slash our carbon emissions by 55 per cent by 2030. Our transition to a greener fleet is key to achieving that target,” said Bpost Belgium CEO Jos Donvil in a press release. “We are making our daily journeys greener through a balanced mix of sustainable vehicles.”
