Wout van Aert takes third in first stage of Vuelta a España
American Brandon McNulty won the first stage of the Vuelta a España in Portugal on Saturday. In a 12km individual time trial from Lisbon to Oeiras, the 26-year-old was 2 seconds faster than the Czech Mathias Vacek. Belgian Wout van Aert came in third, just under 3 seconds behind.
McNulty, who finished fifth at the Olympics, secured his seventh victory this season after a stage and overall win in the Tour of Valencia, a time trial win in the UAE Tour, the GP Miguel Indurain, a time trial win in the Tour de Romandie and the national time trial championship.
The second stage takes the peloton from Cascais to Ourem on Sunday. After 191km, one of the few opportunities for the sprinters awaits.
The 2024 Vuelta a España celebrates its 79th edition this year, with its first start in Portugal since 1997. The race began on 17 August in Lisbon and finishes in the Spanish capital, Madrid, on Sunday 8 September.
