Brewery De Coureur launches beer with English breweries
Microbrewery De Coureur in Kessel-Lo, near Leuven, is launching a new beer on Friday in collaboration with several breweries from Norfolk in England.
The beer, named Strangers Red Ale, honours the historical connection between Flanders and Norfolk, tracing back to the 14th century when Flemish and Dutch Protestant weavers, known as "Strangers," sought refuge in Norfolk to escape religious persecution.
Norwich became their new home, where they influenced local traditions, including the introduction of red dye made from the madder root.

To commemorate this shared heritage and brewing tradition, Visit Flanders and Visit Leuven facilitated a partnership between breweries from the two regions. "The aim was to learn from each other about the brewing process," says Bart Delvaux of De Coureur. “You can never learn enough from each other. That’s how we arrived at this result some time later.”
Strangers Red Ale, a 5.2 per cent ABV malty beer with a deep red hue, is brewed with the same recipe in both Kessel-Lo and Norwich. Only the water source differs. The beer debuts simultaneously in Norwich and Leuven on Friday, with a livestream available. It will be sold at De Coureur and in Leuven bars Soigneur, Maltz andAntico.
