Brussels' only open-air pool prepares for summer season
Brussels’ only open-air swimming pool will start its summer season on 1 July. Flow, in Anderlecht, will offer family swim sessions, aqua aerobics, swimming lessons, yoga and cultural activities.
A new feature this summer is a sauna, which was inaugurated on 8 June in the presence of the Norwegian ambassador to Belgium. This year, for the first time, the pool opened weekly during the winter and spring for cold-water swimming.
The entire Flow site, from the organic water filters to the sauna, is powered by locally generated green electricity via energy platform Bolt. The initiative was launched in 2021 by Pool Is Cool, a platform of citizens campaigning for the reintroduction of outdoor swimming in Brussels.
“Flow is not a solution to the pressing shortage of outdoor swimming water in Brussels, it is far too small for that,” say Paul Steinbrück of Pool Is Cool. “However, it is a prototype to show how huge the demand from Brussels residents for outdoor swimming water is, and to learn what outdoor swimming in Brussels could look like in the future.”
