Cercle Brugge forward Kevin Denkey wins Ebony Shoe Award
Cercle Brugge striker Kevin Denkey has won this year's Ebony Shoe, awarded to the best footballer of African descent in Belgium's domestic competition, the Jupiler Pro League. The Togo international is currently the top scorer in the league with 27 goals.
"This means a lot to me, especially when you see the other players nominated," said Denkey after receiving the award. "They have been pushing me all season and I have to thank them as well. It is also thanks to them that I have performed as well as I have this season."
The striker is the first Togolese player to win the Ebony Shoe. "I am very proud. I also dedicate this trophy to Togo. The national team has helped me develop. It would be very special if I could finish as the top scorer with this trophy."
The Ebony Shoe award has been organised by the NGO African Culture Promotion since 1992. The award is part of the African Awards, which puts African talent in Belgium in the spotlight. The winner is chosen by a jury, including coaches and sports journalists.
