Chipmaker Melexis opens major test site in Malaysia
Belgian chipmaker Melexis has opened a new test facility in Kuching, Malaysia. It is the company's largest such site worldwide and represents a 70 million euros investment.
The 4,500 square metre facility houses 90 machines for testing wafers, sheets of semiconductor material on which integrated circuits are placed. The building has been designed "with future expansion in mind, ensuring adaptability and scalability to meet growing demand".
Semiconductors are increasingly used in a wide range of applications: cars, for example, contain more and more computer chips. The boom in artificial intelligence is also driving demand for the components.
Demand to double
Melexis expects demand for semiconductors to double over the next 10 years. The company continues to focus on "applications in the areas of mobility, sustainability, robotics and health", it said. Melexis mainly produces chips for the automotive sector.
With its "location between eastern and western markets, it streamlines logistics and reduces its carbon footprint", the company said of the choice of site in Southeast Asia. The new building is next to the wafer fabricatin site of industry peer X-Fab, one of Melexis' key suppliers.
