Chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut to cut 150 jobs in Belgium
Trade unions and the management of chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut reached a social agreement on the restructuring of the company on Thursday. Some 150 workers will be laid off in Belgium, compared with earlier plans to cut more than 300 jobs.
The jobs will be cut at the company's distribution centre in Lokeren and its factory in Wieze. A further 178 jobs are at risk at a factory in Halle, where negotiations are still ongoing.
The cost-cutting plan is aimed at simplifying and digitising Barry Callebaut
The chocolate manufacturer had previously announced a cost-cutting plan that would include up to 2,500 job losses worldwide, or almost a fifth of its workforce. After several rounds of negotiations, an agreement was reached earlier this month that will provide extensive compensation and support to affected workers, according to the ACLVB union.
The cost-cutting plan is aimed at simplifying and digitising Barry Callebaut, management said. The job cuts will be followed by an investment of 500 million euros.
