Curfew and house arrest didn’t stop violence on New Year’s Eve

Measures taken by the majors of Antwerp and Anderlecht (part of Brussels region) didn’t prevent the traditional violence in those cities. Dozens of arrests were made, and rioters started several fires. The amount of violence wasn’t larger than in previous years.

In Antwerp several young men got preventive house arrest and in Anderlecht young men weren’t allowed alone on the street.

The Brussels fire brigade still had to intervene in 25 car fires in the capital. In some interventions, multiple cars were on fire. Two people were also injured by fireworks. Three shared scooters or electric bicycles were set on fire. The fire brigade also had to intervene 53 times for smaller fires in which household waste bags, containers, bushes or trees were set on fire.

The Antwerp police have arrested fifteen people in incidents in the city. "But there is no talk of major escalations", police said.
