Dardenne brothers nominated for third Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival

Belgian directors Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne's film Jeunes Mères (Young Mothers) has a chance of winning the Palme d'Or at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, the festival's director has announced.
Jeunes Mères, which will be the brothers' 10th feature film presented in competition at Cannes, tells the story of Jessica, Perla, Julie, Ariane and Naïma, five teenage mothers living in a shelter and hoping for a better life for their babies.
The Dardenne brothers are among the festival's most awarded directors, known for their realistic, socially engaged films. They have won two Palmes d'Or, the festival's highest prize, and six other major awards at Cannes over the course of their career.
Global recognition
In 1999, they gained worldwide recognition with their first Palme d'Or for Rosetta, about a young girl living in a Belgian slum. In 2005, they won their second for L'Enfant, in which a young impoverished father sells his baby behind the back of the child's teenage mother.
"At the Cannes Festival, we are also like publishers. A publisher is loyal to its authors"
"Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne are once again in the running," festival director Thierry Frémaux said on Thursday. "At the Cannes Festival, we are also like publishers. A publisher is loyal to its authors."
The French film Alpha, co-produced by Belgium's Frakas Productions, has also been nominated for the Palme d'Or. Alpha is about an 11-year-old girl living in a fictional 1980s city inspired by New York. As the AIDS epidemic spreads around the world, one of her parents falls ill.
The Cannes Film Festival takes place from 13-24 May.
