De Wever seeks extension for submitting budget plans to European Commission
Federal formateur Bart De Wever has requested a postponement in submitting Belgium’s multiannual budget plan to the European Commission until the end of the year, La Libre Belgique reports.
“It will be impossible to submit a medium-term structural Belgian budget plan to the European Commission before the deadline of 20 September 2024,” De Wever wrote in a letter to Alexia Bertrand, outgoing secretary of state for Budget.
“I therefore ask you to plead with the European Commission to allow Belgium to propose a new medium-term budget plan by the end of the year.”
La Libre writes that delaying the submission of budget, reform and investment policies means the formation of a government with N-VA, MR, Les Engagés, Vooruit and CD&V should also not be expected before the end of the year.
France is also asking for a delay, given the difficulties it is facing in forming a government since its parliamentary elections in July.
