Donald Trump sworn in as 47th president of the United States
Donald Trump took the oath of office as the 47th president of the United States shortly after 12 noon local time in Washington DC. A few minutes earlier, JD Vance was sworn in as the 50th vice president.
Trump is the second president to lead the US for two non-consecutive terms and the first convicted person to occupy the Oval Office.
For the first time, foreign leaders attended the ceremony. Trump had invited far-right politicians, including Argentine president Javier Milei and Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni. Vlaams Belang leader Tom Van Grieken was also present.
100 executive orders
Trump is expected to sign up to 100 executive orders on his first day in office. The decrees will cover issues such as immigration, trade and energy, according to US media. Trump also said he would halt a federal ban on the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that the orders will not include import tariffs. While Trump plans to launch an investigation into US trade relations with China, Mexico and Canada, he will not immediately impose tariffs, the paper said.
“The golden age of America begins right now," Trump said during his inaugural speech. He also attacked Joe Biden and said he "was saved by God to make America great again", referring to the failed assassination attempt in July.
