Dredging company Jan De Nul to finish prestigious ‘palm island’ in Dubai
Belgian dredging company Jan De Nul has won a contract worth almost 200 million euros to finish an artificial island in Dubai, a project that has been stalled for more than 15 years. Property developer Nakheel, part of Dubai Holding, announced the news in a press release on Monday.
The project, named Palm Jebel Ali, will be an artificial island in the shape of a palm tree. Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, already has one of these, but the construction of the second, larger palm island was halted in 2008 during the global financial crisis.
Dubai is now picking up the project again, with the structure of the project already visible. Jan De Nul will be responsible for the dredging, land reclamation, beach profiling and sand placement to enable construction to take place on the island. The first eight of the 16 palm fronds are expected to be ready for construction works by the first quarter of 2025, allowing for the start of villa infrastructure and civil works.
The island will extend over 13.4km2, with a total of 91km of beach. Eighty hotels and resorts will be built on it.
