Drug trafficking investigation: Footballer Nainggolan charged and released on conditions

Former Belgian international footballer Radja Nainggolan has been charged with membership of a criminal organisation but has been released under conditions, according to his lawyers. Nainggolan will be allowed to resume training and participate in matches from Wednesday.

His lawyers said that no questions were put to Nainggolan regarding drug trafficking. The interrogation reportedly focused on sums of money he had given to acquaintances. Nainggolan has not been charged with money laundering.

The footballer was arrested on Monday with 17 other suspects as part of an investigation by the Brussels public prosecutor into international drug trafficking. The inquiry centres on the alleged importation of cocaine from South America to Europe via the port of Antwerp and its subsequent distribution in Belgium.
