Elections 2024: Forza Ninove secures absolute majority in East Flemish municipality
The right-wing Forza Ninove, led by Vlaams Belang politician Guy D'haeseleer, has secured an absolute majority in the East Flemish municipality, winning 18 of the 35 seats. With all votes counted, the party now has a mandate to govern for the next six years despite the slim margin.
In 2018, Forza Ninove received 40 per cent of the vote. This time, they increased their share to 47.4 per cent, with D'haeseleer himself securing 8,552 votes.
D'haeseleer concluded his victory speech by saying that "the cordon is definitely in the trash" now. He was referring to the cordon sanitaire, the agreement of most political parties not to work with Vlaams Belang.
Ninove had been governed by a coalition of Open VLD and the local list Samen. Mayor Tania De Jonge, who ran under the name Positief Ninove, garnered 4,587 votes but fell short. Her party won 11 seats, followed by Vooruit-Groen with five seats, and N-VA with one.
