Elections 2024: Local elections show mixed results so far

Early results suggest there are no major winners or losers after the elections for the municipal and provincial councils. The trends of the national and regional elections of June seem to be confirmed.

The extremes are continuing their progress. Extreme right Vlaams Belang is one of the biggest parties in most parts of Flanders, while extreme left PVDA/PTB is no longer a small party.

Open VLD, the Flemish liberals of outgoing prime minister Alexander De Croo, have taken another step backwards, just like the Flemish green party Groen.

Socialist Vooruit continues its comeback and the Christian democrats of CD&V remain the strongest party in rural Flanders.

On the francophone side, more results still have to come in early on Sunday evening. But there, too, the trends of June are being confirmed, with a gain for the extreme left and loss for green party Ecolo.
