Electric car sales continue to rise among Belgian drivers and companies
More new electric cars have been registered in Belgium in the first nine months of this year than in the whole of 2023, mobility federation Traxio reports.
From January to September, a total of 96,233 new and 16,004 second-hand electric cars were registered. Almost nine out of 10 new electric vehicles are in the name of companies or leasing firms. Among second-hand cars, half are registered to businesses and half to individuals.
Tesla is the clear favourite maker among private buyers in Belgium, a Traxio spokesperson said. “Among company cars, there is a much wider variety of models and brands.”
The Flemish government’s subsidy for people buying electric vehicles has had a clear effect, with sales doubling among private drivers. Its discontinuation will “have a negative effect on sales to individuals for several years”, Traxio says.
The market for electric cars is thriving in Belgium, while it has been in decline for some time at European level, according to Traxio. According to the latest figures published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, the segment fell by 43.9 per cent in August in the EU, to 92,627 units, in part due to rapidly falling sales in Germany and France.
