Elim Chan to step down as chief conductor of Antwerp Symphony Orchestra
Conductor Elim Chan will step down as principal conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra after the 2023-2024 season.
Since her appointment, Chan has become a much sought-after guest conductor with orchestras around the world, which is one of the reasons she is stepping down in Antwerp.
In 2019, Hong Kong-born Elim Chan became both the first female principal conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, formerly deFilharmonie, and the youngest ever at the age of 32. "Since then, Chan's international profile has gained momentum," says the art institute. "She has developed her own energetic style, which effortlessly captivates audiences at her well-attended concerts."
This summer, Chan will record another album with the orchestra, featuring music by Ravel, Prokofiev and Ogonek. Her last concerts as principal conductor are scheduled for May 2024, with violinist Midori as soloist.
In the meantime, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra has embarked on a search for a successor. Honorary conductor Philippe Herreweghe and conductor emeritus Jaap Van Zweden remain on board.
