Elisabet Gunnarsdottir takes charge of Belgian women’s national football team
The Belgian women’s national football team, the Red Flames, have appointed Elisabet Gunnarsdottir as their new head coach. Gunnarsdottir, who has signed a contract until the summer of 2027, succeeds Ives Serneels after his 14-year tenure.
After a playing career at the highest level in Iceland, Gunnarsdottir, 48, moved into coaching. She started with Icelandic club IBV in 2002 and later enjoyed significant success with Valur, leading the team to four national titles and a cup victory.
She then coached Swedish team Kristianstads DDF for 14 years. She also served as an assistant coach for the Icelandic women’s national team and coached the country’s U21 squad.
With Gunnarsdottir at the helm, the Royal Belgian Football Association hopes to build on Belgium’s recent progress in women’s football.
“The women’s game is evolving rapidly, and Belgium must not be left behind,” said CEO Peter Willems. “Our goal is to climb the FIFA rankings and establish ourselves on the world stage. Gunnarsdottir’s impressive track record and international experience make her the ideal person to take the Red Flames to the next level.”
"Together, we can achieve great results"
The coach will be supported by her assistant, Swedish coach Magnus Palsson, and former Red Flame Lenie Onzia.
“I am excited to coach the Red Flames, especially with the European Championship on the horizon," Gunnarsdottir said. "Belgium has made significant progress in recent years, building a strong national team with both experienced and young players. I am eager to continue this work alongside the Royal Belgian Football Association, staff, and players. Together, we can achieve great results.”
Gunnarsdottir is expected to arrive in Belgium this week to begin her tenure. Her primary focus will be preparing the team for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers followed by the 2027 World Cup.
