Belgium’s Elise Mertens on Monday qualified for the quarter-finals of the doubles at Wimbledon, the third grand slam tournament of the tennis season. With her Taiwanese partner Hsieh Su-Wei, she beat the American duo Sofia Kenin/Bethanie Mattek-Sands in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-1). Mertens and Hsieh will face Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals.
In doubles, Mertens and Hsieh are ranked number 1 and 2 in the world. The duo last won at Wimbledon in 2021. In 2022 and 2023, Mertens played with Zhang Shuai and Storm Hunter and lost the final twice.
In the singles tournaments, Mertens got knocked out of Wimbledon last week after suffering a two-set defeat to Emma Raducanu.
