Elise Mertens and David Goffin eliminated at Wimbledon
Belgium's Elise Mertens was brushed aside at Wimbledon by Britain's Emma Raducanu in the second round. Compatriot David Goffin also failed to qualify for the next round.
Mertens was eliminated on Wednesday in the two-set match that lasted an hour and 15 minutes. Raducanu quickly dominated the match, winning 6-1, 6-2 and advancing to the third round in her home tournament. The world number 135 will play the winner of the match between Arantxa Rus and Maria Sakkari.
The 28-year-old Mertens will still play in the doubles, where she is ranked number 1 in the world. With Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh, ranked second, she will play Alicia Barnett and Freya Christie, who received a wildcard. Mertens and Hsieh won the title together in 2021.
Goffin was also eliminated on Wednesday, in his 10th appearance at Wimbledon. In a game postponed due to bad weather, the Belgian lost against Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic in five sets, having led 5-0 in the fifth.
