Wimbledon women's doubles final for Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter
Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter easily qualified for the women's doubles final at Wimbledon Friday, the third Grand Slam tournament of the season.
Teaming up with Australia's Storm Hunter, the Flemish player's third series partner on the London grass, she defeated American Caroline Dolehide and Chinese Zhang Shuai in straight sets. After barely 55 minutes of tennis, the final score was 6-1, 6-1 on the scoreboard on Court 1 at the All England Club.
Mertens is ranked eighth in the world in doubles, while Hunter is seventh. The duo will play for the title against Taiwan's Su-Wu Hsieh and Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic, who beat Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic and Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) in the other semi-final.
Elise Mertens already won the doubles title at Wimbledon in 2021, with Hsieh as her partner. With Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka, Mertens has won two Grand Slam titles: the 2019 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open.
Last year, Elise Mertens lost the doubles final at Wimbledon. She then teamed up with Zhang Shuai to lose 6-2, 6-4 to the Czechs Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.
In singles action last week, Mertens (WTA 28) lost in the second round to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina (WTA 76), who reached the semi-finals.
