Engie develops solar park in port of Ghent

Engie has started the construction of a solar park at its Rodenhuize site in the port of Ghent. The installation, which is expected to be operational by the summer of 2025, will produce around 5.7 million kilowatt hours of green electricity per year - enough to supply more than 1,600 households.
The site will house 8,030 solar panels covering 45,000 square metres. The project supports the climate ambitions of North Sea Port and the City of Ghent, both of which are working to increase renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions in the port area.
Engie has already invested in three wind turbines and an ultra-fast EV charging station on the same site. The Rodenhuize site - a former industrial area - was previously unsuitable for development due to soil contamination and spatial constraints. The solar farm gives the site a new lease of life as part of Belgium's wider energy transition.
To encourage local biodiversity, Engie plans to install a bee hotel, plant flowering vegetation between the panels and create a hedgerow around the site.
