Festival Dranouter celebrates 50th anniversary edition
In the Heuvelland region of West Flanders, at the foot of Kemmel Hill, Festival Dranouter is celebrating its 50th anniversary edition this weekend with the slogan "50 years of new traditions". The music festival sold out in advance for the first time in its history. It begins on Friday and closes on Sunday with a performance by Belgian electronic rock band GOOSE.
More than 50,000 festival-goers will celebrate Dranouter's 50th anniversary. The festival, with a focus on folk music, sold out just under a week in advance.
The event starts with a performance by the Norwegian folk-rock band Gangar. Later on Friday, Belgian bands Portland and Kommil Foo will take to the stages. Local heroes Het Zesde Metaal will close the first day on the main stage.
The festival also welcomes several international artists, including Suzanne Vega and The Waterboys. Other big names include Spinvis, Brihang and Compact Disk Dummies.
Several performers will pay tribute to Belgian artist Willem Vermandere, who recently decided to stop performing at the age of 84. He would normally take to the stage at Dranouter, but instead, his son Augustijn, actress Maaike Cafmeyer and Eva De Roovere will offer a musical homage.
Festival Dranouter will also celebrate its anniversary with an outdoor photo exhibition. The best archive photos from over the years are displayed throughout the village of Dranouter. Among them are photos of artists, but also of the atmosphere and food and drink stands. An accompanying photo book is available.
