First Belgian Transplant Games bring together 500 transplant recipients and donors
The first Belgian Transplant Games are taking place in Leuven this weekend. About 500 transplant recipients, people undergoing dialysis, donors, donor families and supporters will compete for medals in multiple disciplines.
The disciplines range from athletics, volleyball, pétanque and cycling to darts, padel, tennis and swimming. The competition also provides initiations in various sports and recreational activities.
The games take place at KU Leuven's Arenberg sports campus in Heverlee and at the Philips site. The events kicked off on Saturday at 11.00 and will close with a ceremony on Sunday at 16.00.
Apart from the sporting objective, the organisation of the championship is important to show what possibilities a person still has after a transplant. A lot of attention is therefore also paid to participants' stories.
In 2027, Leuven will also host the World Transplant Games, which attract thousands of sports enthusiasts every two years.
