Flanders earmarks over €1 billion to help make homes energy efficient

Flanders on Tuesday launched its zero-interest “renovation loans” intended for middle- and low-income households and aimed at making homes less energy-consuming.

The first such loan was signed on Tuesday in Koersel, Limburg, in the presence of Flemish Energy Minister Zuhal Demir.

Interest in these loans, limited to 60,000 euros, is already high, according to the Limburg Energy House, which indicates that it has already received more than 300 applications.

According to Minister Demir, the Government of Flanders is earmarking “more than a billion” euros to provide this assistance for people who wish to lower their energy bills by improving their housing. This is “the only way to also protect against future increases in energy prices,” she said.

The home renovation loans can be obtained from 1 September and must be repaid within a maximum of 25 years. The “energy houses” responsible locally for receiving, processing and responding to applications also provide advice and support.
