Flanders publishes English version of its Canon
The Flemish government launched the English-language version of the Canon of Flanders on Monday. Minister president Jan Jambon and Education minister Ben Weyts presented the first copies to ambassadors and representatives of Scotland, Wales, the US and the Netherlands.
The Canon - an overview of key elements of Flemish history, culture and society - was launched in May last year and led the sales list of non-fiction books for four months. It was also in the top three best-selling books last year.
The Dutch-language original was followed by an audio version and now an English translation. Later there will also be versions in French and German.
"We want as many people as possible to become acquainted with the events and people who have shaped Flanders," Jambon and Weyts say in a statement. "The Canon has found an unexpectedly large audience in its own country, but there is also interest in our history and culture abroad."
