Flanders opens digital museum about its history and heritage
The Flemish government opened the Flanders All Around Museum (FAAM) in Dendermonde on Tuesday. It is not inside a physical building but on a small tile with a QR code. Passers-by can use the app to discover Flemish history and heritage stories interactively.
The Department of Culture, Youth and Media built the first 150 experiences based on proposals from the heritage sector. Input came from museums, archives, heritage libraries and heritage services of cities and municipalities. FAAM wants to keep adding stories in the coming years, working with heritage partners.
The government has ambitious plans for the museum, aiming to turn it into "the largest virtual museum in the world", and provides 1 million euros of funding per year. The app is available for free.
"We are bringing together the rich heritage and culture of Flanders in one app. It is a rather unique project," said Flemish minister president and Culture minister Jan Jambon during the opening on Tuesday. "With one download, Flanders' heritage is at your fingertips."
