Belgian innovation on show at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas
The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is set to begin on Tuesday, featuring around 20 Belgian companies.
CES is the world's largest tech fair, this year hosting around 3,500 exhibitors over three days. The Flemish export agency Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) and hub.brussels no longer have a group stand at the fair, while their Walloon counterpart Awex will be present for the sixth time in seven years.
Five Flemish companies will participate independently in CES, including Leuven research centre imec and its spin-off MICLEDI Microdisplays, which specialises in developing microdisplays for augmented reality glasses. The other Flemish companies taking part are Moonbird, which makes a handheld breathing device, Nobi, which manufactures smart lights for the healthcare sector, and Custo, which provides smart mailboxes.
FIT says Flemish companies can receive individual support and the agency is prioritising "niche events" that focus on business-to-business contacts. In February, the region will be represented at the Mobile World Congress telecoms fair in Barcelona.
The majority of Belgian representation at CES comes from Walloon companies, with 13 start-ups and SMEs participating through Awex, nine of them for the first time. These companies span various sectors, including charging technology for electric cars, medical applications, image processing, and artificial intelligence.
The CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, Gary Shapiro, will officially inaugurate the Walloon stand on the first day of CES. The Belgian ambassador to the US, Jean-Arthur Régibeau, and the Belgian consul general in Los Angeles will attend. Belgian diplomatic representatives will also participate in events such as Belgian Beer Time, a networking event at the Awex stand. Additionally, the agenda for Walloon companies includes meetings with companies from the Canadian province of Quebec.
