Flemish director remakes 'Jesus Christ Superstar' for Dutch theatre
Belgian theatre director Ivo van Hove and producer Albert Verlinde will create a new version of the rock opera 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. The play is due to be seen in the Netherlands in 2024. It is, after 'Lazarus', the second production Verlinde and Van Hove have worked on together.
The play, first performed in 1972, tells a story about the last week in the life of Jesus. The music was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with Tim Rice penning the lyrics. The play ran continuously on the West End and Broadway for many years. The original album sold more than seven million copies.
Jesus Christ Superstar' is "a story of and for our time", director Ivo van Hove says.
Van Hove calls Jesus Christ Superstar "a wonderful - purely song-driven - musical about a socially inspired group of friends in which someone, Jesus, develops into a leader with innovative ideas to stand up for people who have no voice in society. It leads to a new movement, a popular uprising. Anger takes over. A story of and for our time."
Details about the casting will be announced soon. The premiere of the new 'Jesus Christ Superstar' version will take place at the DeLaMar Theatre in Amsterdam on 21 January 2024.
