Flemish electric car premium budget more than doubles
The Flemish government’s budget for electric car premiums has more than doubled, according to a statement from the office of the region's Mobility minister, Annick De Ridder.
Established under former minister Lydia Peeters, the programme offers financial incentives for private individuals purchasing fully electric cars. From February 2024, buyers could apply for a 5,000 euro subsidy on new electric vehicles and 3,000 euros for second-hand ones. By April, the allocated budget of 26 million euros had already been surpassed.
Since then, the amount allocated has continued to climb, a spokesperson for De Ridder’s office reports. The total is now estimated at between 55 and 60 million euros. In total, 11,590 premiums have been requested, with 9,736 applications for new cars and 1,854 for second-hand vehicles. Of these, private individuals made 11,531 applications, while non-profit organisations and foundations requested 121, and car-sharing providers 118.
While the premium remains available until the end of this year, the new Flemish government plans to end it early, De Ridder's office confirmed.
